The exact causes of acne are still debated, but it’s a commonly accepted fact that excess of skin oil (sebum) secreted by the sebaceous glands clogs the latter, leading to infection. The clogged glands on the skin swell up and acne starts to appear. The most common form of acne is acne lesions of the kind known as acne vulgaris. But in rare cases the infected glands may burst beneath the skin causing acne cysts. As to the reason for the increase in skin oil secretion, hormones such as androgen get the blame.
